Our early chirps/spin implementation with several nodes across Harvard-affiliated hospitals, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, UCLA, and Regenstrief Institute (returning records of millions of samples) continues to give us confidence in our original design decisions. Building on this success, we now have three major SPIN efforts using a common informatics network:

[BIOSPECIMENS]

The Virtual Specimen Locator (VSL) is the first deployed SPIN implementation in production use.
VSL provides investigators with access to discarded human tissues while respecting patient privacy and decentralized ownership of valuable research resources.

[PUBLIC HEALTH]

The AEGIS system provides real-time population health monitoring for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Since syndromic surveillance requires broad analysis of routine clinical events in regional hospitals, AEGIS is leveraging the strong institutional control provided by SPIN to engender public health participation on the local, state, and national level.
